When it comes to wedding food, we’re all about fun, creativity, and a bit of personality. Josh and I really bonded over food in the early days of our relationship, trying new places and flavours was one of our favourite things to do. For our own wedding, we decided to keep it simple and personal by having our favourite local pizza restaurant cater. They’d never done a wedding before, but they were thrilled to help! So, we’re big fans of thinking outside the box when it comes to your wedding menu. After all, there’s so much time spent chatting and eating, why not make it unforgettable? Here are a few things that really get our foodie hearts racing:
1. Food Trucks
A food truck adds an instant relaxed feel to a wedding. Serving everything from tacos to wood-fired pizza, guests could even be treated to a variety of delicious options if you had more than one! The beauty of the food truck is your guests can still mill around and mingle while trying different nibbles of food! It’s great it’s your having an outdoor wedding with a festival kind of vibe.

2. Homages to the Couple’s Culture
We love when couples celebrate their heritage through food. Incorporating traditional family recipes or dishes from their home country adds a personal touch to the celebration. For many guests, it might be the first time they’ve experienced such unique cuisine, making it a wonderful opportunity to share beloved cultural flavors with friends and in-laws. It’s a meaningful way to honor your roots while introducing something special to everyone at your wedding! One of our past couples beautifully showcased their cultural heritage through their food choices. The bride, with African roots, and the groom, of Persian descent, created a memorable reception with an African food buffet. For the evening, they treated guests to delicious Persian-style flatbreads and dessert platters. It was a fantastic way to celebrate both cultures and introduce guests to new, exciting flavors!
3. DIY Bars
A loaded fries bar, olive station, or burrata display are fantastic ways to offer guests a chance to get creative with their meals. These interactive food stations let guests customize their dishes to suit their tastes, making the dining experience not only delicious but fun! Imagine a taco bar where guests can pile on their favorite toppings, or a charcuterie station with a variety of cheeses, meats, and crackers to choose from. You could even set up a DIY sushi roll station, where guests can roll their own creations. These options give guests more choice, which is especially helpful for those with specific preferences or dietary restrictions, ensuring everyone finds something they love. The added variety also sparks conversation and makes the meal feel like a unique part of the celebration!
4. Personalised Cocktail Menus
Signature drinks are a fun way for couples to sprinkle a little of their own story into the celebration! Think of cocktails that capture their unique tastes or memorable moments from their journey together. Maybe it’s a drink named after the place they met, or a cocktail inspired by their favorite vacation spot. You could even have a quirky drink that tells a funny inside joke between the two of them. These drinks don’t just get people talking, they give everyone a taste of the couple’s personality and their shared adventures.
5. Sharing
Sharing platters are a great way to create a relaxed, communal dining experience that encourages conversation and connection. Think of a tapas-style vibe where each table gets a selection of different dishes to enjoy together. Let’s be honest, you’re probably going to end up with a much more generous portion than the typical meat, veg, and potatoes! One of our favorite spots for this vibe is Ponden Mill. We’ve had the pleasure of working with them a few times, and their food never disappoints. Plus all the little bowls laid out on the table look amazing!
6 . Unconventional Wedding Cakes
We love seeing couples break away from tradition and opt for wedding cakes that truly reflect their personalities. While a classic tiered cake is always a beautiful choice, there’s something extra special about a couple who chooses something a little different, whether it’s inspired by their favourite flavours, shared memories, or just something fun and unexpected! Some of our favorite alternatives to a traditional wedding cake include:
Cheese Wheel Cakes – Perfect for couples who prefer savory over sweet! A stacked tower of artisan cheeses, paired with crackers, chutneys, and fruits, makes for a delicious and elegant alternative.
Mini Dessert Spreads – Why settle for just one cake when you can have a whole selection of treats? Think mini tarts, brownies, eclairs, and macarons, something for everyone to enjoy!
Millefeuille – Delicate, buttery layers of puff pastry with rich pastry cream in between, this classic found in Italy and France is perfect for couples who want something refined yet indulgent. It can be stacked as a dramatic tower or served as individual portions for guests to enjoy.
We believe the meal you share with your loved ones on your wedding day should feel as special as the day itself—unique, memorable, and a reflection of the couple's personality. We hope we’ve encouraged you with our short list of ideas to think outside the box of the standard three course menu and do something that feels most like you!
